Key Insights on Technology

The underlying AI technology exponential has progressed roughly as expected, moving from 'smart high school student to smart college student to beginning PhD level' - Dario

• First-order thinking means solving root causes with technology rather than either-or solutions, as demonstrated in Zappos distribution flow optimization
• Depopulation without new technology would mean economic shrinkage, but AI arrives precisely when we need machines to do jobs we won't have people for
• "Before this technological age, could you have had a mistake that could cost billions of dollars? Not really. But now you can leave a piece of software, could go out and do 70,000 transactions" - Lloyd
• AI leverage creates unprecedented risk: software can execute 70,000 transactions automatically without human intuition checks
• Wells Fargo still uses horse and buggy logo while decommissioning mainframes, showing institutional technology lag
• Technology earnings up 18% but stocks down 12%, representing 25% multiple compression as AI investments shift companies from asset-light to asset-heavy models
• Early technology decisions at Stripe like Ruby and MongoDB still define the company 15 years later, demonstrating how "initial conditions" shape decades of engineering work
