In this episode of Radio Davos, host Linda Lacina from the World Economic Forum interviews Daron Acemoglu, a world-renowned economist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, and 2024 Nobel Prize laureate. Daron shares his expert analysis on how technological evolution, global market shifts, and automated artificial intelligence impact global labor dynamics and democratic stability.
Drawing from his latest work, ماذا حدث للديمقراطية الليبرالية؟, Daron explains how the transition to a post-industrial economy fractured the traditional working-class political coalitions that previously sustained shared prosperity. He highlights how the decoupling of corporate revenue growth from wage expansion created severe social divides and fueled deep anti-systemic resentment across Western democracies.
To counter these existential threats, Daron proposes 'worker-friendly AI'—a paradigm focused on augmenting human expertise rather than displacing labor. He emphasizes that active democratic participation, tax policy reform, and updated business models are necessary to ensure technological advancements benefit humanity at large.
The Structural Crisis of Modern Liberal Democracy
In ماذا حدث للديمقراطية الليبرالية؟, Daron defines liberal democracy as an institutional achievement that balances individual freedoms with state institutions to deliver shared economic growth.
"The liberal democratic system is now in danger because its root crisis began at least fifty years ago during the shift from an industrial to a post-industrial society," - Daron.
Post-industrial shifts severed the historical link between corporate revenue expansion and wage increases through digital automation and supply chain globalization.
Political alignments shifted radically as left-of-center political parties lost non-college educated working-class voters to right-wing movements while becoming dominated by urban college graduates.
Algorithmic Cages and Social Isolation Risks
Corporate separation and online social networks created isolated bubbles that blinded elites to growing public discontent prior to major political shocks in 2016.
Daron describes the 'algorithmic cage' as algorithmic surveillance enforcing rigid social norms without fostering shared moral values or mutual understanding.
"Social media business models profit by capturing attention through targeted ads, which worsens the liberal democracy crisis rather than creating open public spaces," - Daron.
For over 35 years starting in 1980, real inflation-adjusted wages for non-college educated American men declined almost annually.
Worker-Friendly Artificial Intelligence Solutions
"Worker-friendly AI" leverages real-time context-relevant information to complement human labor and increase worker productivity rather than replacing jobs.
Daron asserts that focusing heavily on AGI and superintelligence threatens to displace workers globally, reducing labor to redundant second-class citizens.
Practical worker-friendly AI applications include assisting nurses in real-time diagnosis, enabling teachers to deliver personalized education, and enhancing trade skills for electricians and plumbers.
"Over $1 trillion is currently spent on AI, primarily allocated to building foundational models aimed at automating tasks rather than complementing human labor," - Daron.
Policy Reforms for Rebuilding Shared Prosperity
Daron highlights tax system distortion in advanced economies: "Capital is taxed at very low rates, sending a strong signal to corporations that the government subsidies automation."
A four-day workweek should stem from rising labor productivity and expanded leisure, not a fatalistic surrender to technological job destruction.
Contrasting automation approaches: Michigan automakers laid off workers when introducing robots, whereas German manufacturers retrained workers into high-skilled technical specialists.
Daron estimates only a 30% probability that society will successfully invest in preserving liberal democracy and advancing worker-friendly AI.
