Jim Weiner and Charlie Fultz, two artists and longtime friends, recount their extraordinary 1976 UFO encounter at Maine's Allagash Waterway. Weiner, a former college student studying art education, and Fultz, trained in ceramics and martial arts, were part of a four-person camping expedition that included Weiner's identical twin brother Jack and friend Chuck Rak.
The 17-day wilderness canoe trip took an unexpected turn when the group encountered a large, plasma-like sphere that pursued their canoe across Eagle Lake. What initially seemed like a brief UFO sighting revealed itself as something far more complex when, twelve years later, both twins began experiencing identical nightmares featuring the same four people from their camping trip.
Their story gained credibility through extensive investigation by UFO researcher Ray Fowler, whose work culminated in The Allagash Abductions. The case became notable for its multiple witnesses, physical evidence, and the remarkable consistency of their separately conducted hypnotic regression sessions. The encounter also coincided with military tracking experiments being conducted in the area by John Norseen, who later developed patents for brain-controlled aircraft technology.
Childhood Paranormal Activity and Family History
The Weiner twins experienced anomalous phenomena throughout childhood in their Pennsylvania home, including covers being pulled off beds, shadowy figures, and floating balls of light they nicknamed 'Harry the Ghost.'
Both twins have RH-negative blood, a trait commonly associated with alien abduction experiencers, and demonstrated unusual synchronicity when both broke their arms within a day of each other at age six.
When one twin was given anesthesia for his broken arm, the other twin 'Jack goes out cold' simultaneously, an incident documented by their family doctor and reported in local newspapers.
Two men claiming to represent a research institute, possibly Duke University's Rhine Institute, attempted to recruit the twins for study in the late 1950s but were 'literally thrown out of the house' by their father.
The Allagash Waterway Expedition Setup
Four artists in their mid-twenties planned an extensive 17-day canoe trip through Maine's Allagash Water System, a former logging area converted to recreational wilderness with strict ranger oversight.
The group flew in via bush plane to access remote lakes, with rangers immediately checking their gear for contraband and ensuring adequate survival supplies for the extended wilderness stay.
Two days before the UFO encounter, they witnessed their first anomalous sighting: a yellowish-white sphere that 'went like that, like a lens closing in on itself' when viewed through binoculars.
The Eagle Lake UFO Encounter
On their second night at Eagle Lake, the four men built a three-hour bonfire as a navigation beacon before going night fishing, taking about 25-30 minutes to navigate through standing trees to their fishing spot.
Charlie spotted an 'aspirin tablet-sized white circle' that grew larger as it approached, eventually revealing itself as a sphere 'as big as a two-story house' moving silently 15 feet above the treetops.
When Charlie flashed an SOS signal with his flashlight, the craft 'stopped' immediately and projected a 'big cone of light, blue light, like a neon blue' toward their canoe while approaching to within 75 yards.
The group experienced missing time during their panicked paddle back to shore - their three-hour bonfire had completely burned out despite the encounter seeming to last only minutes.
Hypnotic Regression Revelations
Twelve years later, both twins began experiencing identical nightmares featuring the same four people from Allagash, leading Jim to seek help after encountering Communion by Whitley Strieber during epilepsy treatment.
Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Prince of Our Disorder, was recommended through neurologist Jonathan Silverman, eventually connecting them with UFO researcher Ray Fowler.
Under separate hypnotic regression sessions documented in The Allagash Abductions, all four men recalled being taken aboard a craft where gray beings with 'bulbous heads with large eyes, no nose like us' conducted medical examinations.
The beings were described as under five feet tall with four-digit hands providing 'four opposable digits' and technology designed around their unique hand structure, wearing tight-fitting spandex-like clothing.
Physical Evidence and Lasting Effects
Jim experienced permanent hair growth cessation on both shins where oval devices were placed, while his identical twin Jack developed tumors in the exact same locations that pathologists couldn't identify.
The tumors were sent to the Air Force Institute of Pathology in Washington D.C., where they were described as resembling 'the type of growth that is common when you have bone marrow taken out of a bone.'
Both twins experienced dramatic artistic changes post-encounter, with Jack becoming obsessed with mathematical grid patterns later identified in Secrets of the World Grid and Anti-Gravity by David Hatcher Childress.
Charlie developed an obsession with ancient architecture sites like Teotihuacan and Baalbek, believing they function as 'macro chip technology' rather than merely ceremonial structures.
The John Norseen Connection
John Norseen, who later developed Lockheed patents for brain-controlled aircraft, was conducting military TTR (tag, trace, retrieve) experiments at Allagash on the same day as the UFO incident.
Norseen told the witnesses he was testing subcutaneous tracking devices on military personnel to monitor 'blood pressure, heart rate, that sort of stuff' and location data in the wilderness.
When asked if their experience was government experimentation, Norseen replied 'we wouldn't do that. We would just go away' but suggested his tracking experiments may have attracted the phenomena.
Norseen died in a hotel room shortly after sending a cryptic email containing 'I R V'd the upcoming lecture, John, not heard nor seen' - a possible reference to his remote viewing abilities and his surname.
USS Holland UFO Incident
In May 1970, Charlie witnessed two spherical lights approach the USS Holland off Spain's coast at impossible speeds, observed by 24 crew members including commissioned officers.
The objects 'came to a complete stop' after approaching faster than 'you could swing your arm from your shoulder to directly in front of you' and were observed for nearly two full minutes.
Both spheres ascended vertically 'so quickly that it went from like a point of light to a line and was gone' with no sonic boom despite apparent supersonic speeds.
The commanding officer told the crew 'If I were you guys, I wouldn't say anything to anyone anyhow, because no one's going to believe you. And this topic's closed.'
