Father Mike Schmitz hosts the Bible in a Year podcast, a daily scripture reading program brought to you by Ascension Press. He reads from the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition using The Great Adventure Bible timeline structure, guiding listeners through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation over 365 days.
Day 59 focuses on Numbers chapters 8 and 9, Deuteronomy chapter 8, and Psalm 93. The readings explore the consecration of Levites, the establishment of Passover as perpetual worship, God's guidance through cloud and fire, and Moses' warnings about forgetting God during times of abundance.
Father Mike provides crucial context: Numbers occurs just 13 months after Israel's exodus from Egypt when they were still learning to trust God, while Deuteronomy represents Moses' final speech after 40 years of wilderness wandering, preparing the people for entry into the promised land.
The Levites' Sacred Service and Retirement System
The Levites underwent elaborate consecration involving water of expiation, shaving their entire bodies, washing clothes, and offering bulls for sin and burnt offerings.
God established a structured service system: Levites worked from age 25 to 50, then 'withdrew from the work of the service' but continued to 'minister to their brethren in the tent of meeting.'
The Levites replaced all firstborn Israelites as God's special possession, serving as intermediaries to prevent plagues when people approached the sanctuary.
Passover as Perpetual Obligation Without Exemption
When some Israelites were ritually unclean from touching dead bodies, Moses consulted God about Passover exemptions - the answer was no exemptions allowed.
God established that even those unclean or traveling must keep Passover in the second month: 'they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.'
Father Mike connects this to Mass attendance: 'If we dispense ourselves from this true and living worship...then we are cutting ourselves off' from God's people.
Those who voluntarily refrained from Passover 'shall be cut off from his people' - showing worship as non-negotiable covenant obligation.
Divine Guidance Through Cloud and Fire
The cloud covered the tabernacle by day with 'the appearance of fire by night' - Israel moved only when the cloud moved, whether after days, months, or longer periods.
'At the command of the Lord they encamped, and at the command of the Lord they set out' - complete dependence on God's timing rather than human planning.
Father Mike emphasizes the spiritual lesson: 'I'll move when God asks me to move and I'll stay when He asks me to stay' as a model for trusting divine guidance.
Moses' Warning About Forgetting God in Prosperity
After 40 years of wilderness testing, Moses warned that abundance would tempt Israel to say 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.'
The promised land description includes 'brooks of water, fountains and springs...wheat and barley...a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.'
Father Mike observes: 'We forget God in the sunny days. We forget God when we're abundantly blessed...because then we don't need him.'
Moses commanded remembrance of God's faithfulness: 'You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth.'
